# About skrat.im

An independent URL shortener from Slovakia with no ads and no tracking. Why it exists, what the name means and why it has two domains.

## What skrat.im is

skrat.im is a URL shortener: it swaps a long address for a short one that redirects to it. Every link also gets a QR code, cookie-free click statistics, optional expiry or password protection, and an interface for programs and AI agents. It works without sign-up; an account is optional and only serves to manage links from anywhere.

## Why it exists

Shorteners are as old as the web, but the free ones tend to be full of ads, store more about the people who click than necessary, and their links quietly disappear after a while. Slovakia and the Czech Republic also lacked a shortener that speaks their languages and has a short, memorable domain. skrat.im is the answer: no ads, clearly described data handling, and links that last until you remove them.

## What the name means

*Skrátim* is Slovak for "I will shorten it". *Skrat* also means an electrical short circuit, which is why the brand looks the way it does: a torn-off piece of blue insulating tape. Torn off is shortened.

## Why two domains

skrat.im is the main address: the portal, the app, the documentation and links. krat.im ("krátim", "I am shortening") is one character shorter and serves links only. Each domain has its own alias namespace, so when `skrat.im/concert` is taken, `krat.im/concert` may still be free. Both domains are run by the same system under the same rules.
